KL highlands escape: 4-day Genting and Cameron Highlands itinerary
Last reviewed
The KL highlands circuit: why these two destinations work together
Genting Highlands (1,700–1,900 metres) and Cameron Highlands (1,300–1,500 metres) are both easily accessed from Kuala Lumpur and offer a genuine break from the city’s equatorial heat. Genting is the entertainment hub — theme parks, casino, cable car, resort complex. Cameron Highlands is the tea-country hill station: walking trails, strawberry farms, colonial rest houses, and plantations stretching to the horizon.
This 4-day plan gives you one full day in KL, one day in Genting, one day in Cameron Highlands, and one day to return via Cameron or take a final KL afternoon. Both highland destinations can be done without a car, though Cameron Highlands is more convenient with private transport or a tour.
Day 1 — Kuala Lumpur: the essentials
Morning: Batu Caves
The KTM Komuter from KL Sentral to Batu Caves takes 35 minutes (MYR 2.60). Arrive before 08:00 to climb the 272 steps in manageable heat. Cathedral Cave is free; budget MYR 3 for a sarong if needed. Allow 90 minutes.
Back in KL by 10:00. Grab to KLCC (MYR 8–12).
Mid-morning and lunch: KLCC and Petronas
Petronas observation deck (MYR 100 adults, closed Mondays — pre-book). After the towers, lunch at the KLCC food court on level 2 of Suria KLCC mall (MYR 15–25) or walk through KLCC Park to Kampung Baru for Malay food at MYR 6–10.
Pre-book Petronas skip-the-queue entry
Afternoon and evening: Bukit Bintang
Monorail to Bukit Bintang for the afternoon. Walk Jalan Bukit Bintang, browse Pavilion or Sungei Wang, and end the evening on Jalan Alor for hawker dinner (MYR 35–50 per person). Sleep in a central Bukit Bintang hotel ready for the early Genting departure tomorrow.
Day 2 — Genting Highlands: cable car and theme park
Morning: bus to Genting
The most convenient public route to Genting is by express bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) or Puduraya to Genting (MYR 12–15 one way, 45–60 minutes). Alternatively, the First Coach from Berjaya Times Square in Bukit Bintang runs hourly from 08:30 directly to First World Hotel (MYR 13–15). This is the most convenient option from Bukit Bintang accommodation.
Buy your tickets online the day before — weekend buses sell out.
Arrive at Genting Resort by 10:00. The Awana Skyway cable car (MYR 8 return) connects the Awana base to the First World area. The views on clear mornings are excellent; cloud and fog make the ride opaque after midday.

Morning and afternoon: Genting SkyWorld
Genting SkyWorld Theme Park opened in phases from 2022 and is now the main attraction. The day pass is MYR 198 adults / MYR 178 children (USD 50 / 45). Zones include SkyAvenue (indoor rides), Ranger’s Roundup, and the Eagle’s Nest rollercoasters. Queue times on weekends peak at 60–90 minutes for the signature rides; arrive at park opening (10:00) to get 2–3 rides done before the crowds build.
The casino at First World Hotel (24 hours, MYR 200 entry for non-Malaysians) is a significant draw for some visitors — it is one of the largest casinos in the world. For non-gamblers, the Chin Swee Caves Temple (free, 10 minutes by cable gondola) is a quieter option with good valley views.
Weekend crowds warning: Genting is Klang Valley’s main domestic leisure destination. On Saturdays from 12:00–18:00, queues for rides, the food court, and even the parking garage are genuinely bad. Midweek visits are a different experience.
Dinner at Genting or return to KL
First World Hotel has a food court with Malay, Chinese, and Indian options at MYR 10–20 per dish — overpriced for the quality but acceptable. Alternatively, head back to KL by 17:00 bus and eat well on Jalan Alor.
If you choose to overnight at Genting (Resorts World hotel rooms from MYR 180 for a weeknight), you get the morning to yourself before the day-trippers arrive — the cable car at 09:00 is magical with low cloud.
Day 3 — Cameron Highlands: tea country
Morning: bus from KL (or Genting by car)
The direct bus from KL TBS to Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands takes 3.5–4 hours (Transnasional, MYR 35–45 one way). Departure at 08:00 arrives by 11:30–12:00. Book at BusOnlineTicket.com. There is also a bus from Genting if you stayed there overnight, but connections are infrequent — check the current schedule.
Cameron Highlands sits at 1,300–1,500 metres; the temperature drops to 18–24°C compared to KL’s 28–35°C. Bring a light jacket.
Afternoon: BOH tea plantation and Mossy Forest
Tanah Rata is the main town. From here, the most-visited site is the BOH Sungai Palas Tea Estate, 30 minutes north by Grab (MYR 15–20). The factory tour is free (10:00–16:30, closed Mondays). The hilltop café above the plantation has proper Cameron Highlands tea at MYR 6–8 per pot, with views over hectares of green terraced slopes that look like a Welsh dream in tropical heat.

The Mossy Forest trail on Gunung Brinchang summit (1,812 metres, MYR 5 entry, 45 minutes each way) is the most atmospheric hike: gnarled trees draped in moss, cloud cover that drifts in and out. The access road is poorly maintained; join an organised tour or take a Grab with a driver willing to take the road.
Strawberry farms are the other Cameron Highland trademark — many of them charge an entry fee (MYR 5–8) to pick fruit at MYR 15–25 per 100g. Strawberry Park Resort and Kea Farm farms are the largest, though quality varies by season.
Evening: Tanah Rata town
Tanah Rata’s small main street has several reliable Indian restaurants (banana-leaf rice, MYR 10–14) and a handful of traveller cafés. Kumar’s restaurant on the main street has been there for decades and feeds hikers and bus travellers reliably. Restoran Tivoli is the best sit-down option for Western-Malay fusion.
Overnight in Tanah Rata or Brinchang (guesthouses from MYR 80/night, midrange hotels MYR 150–250) for a second morning.
Day 4 — return via Cameron Highlands or a final KL afternoon
Option A: morning hike before returning
A second morning in Cameron Highlands gives time for Trails 9A and 9B from Tanah Rata — a 4-hour loop through jungle and tea plantation edges. Start at 07:00 to avoid afternoon cloud. The trails are marked but muddy; proper shoes are essential.
Bus back from Tanah Rata to KL TBS departs at 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00 (MYR 35–45). Arrive KL by 18:00–19:00.
Option B: return to KL for final city sights
If you did one night at Cameron Highlands and want a KL afternoon, the 10:00 bus from Tanah Rata arrives in KL by 14:00. Head to the Islamic Arts Museum (MYR 20) or the KL Bird Park (MYR 63 adults) for the afternoon, then Jalan Alor for a final dinner.

Frequently asked questions about the KL highlands escape
Is Cameron Highlands suitable for children?
Yes, particularly for ages 6–14. The strawberry farm visits and cool temperatures make it an appealing change from lowland heat. The Mossy Forest trail is manageable for older children but too long and muddy for young ones. BOH tea plantation is family-friendly with no strenuous walking.
Can I do Genting and Cameron Highlands in one day?
Technically possible but not recommended. The journey from Genting to Cameron Highlands (via Ipoh or by winding back to KL then taking the bus) takes 4–6 hours. You would spend more time in transit than at either destination. They work best on separate days from KL.
What is the best time to visit Genting Highlands?
Weekday mornings. Genting is a year-round destination with no real seasonal weather difference (it is frequently in cloud). Avoid Malaysian school holidays (June, November–December) and public holidays (Hari Raya, Chinese New Year weekends) when crowds are severe and prices spike.
Is Cameron Highlands cold?
By Malaysian standards, yes. Daytime temperatures range from 18–24°C, dropping to 14–18°C at night and in early morning. Bring a light fleece or hoodie. By European standards it is mild — this is not a mountain retreat, but the contrast with KL’s 32°C feels significant.
Do I need a car to visit Cameron Highlands?
You can manage without a car using public buses to Tanah Rata, Grab for local trips, and joining a half-day tour for BOH plantation and Mossy Forest. The bus schedule between sites is infrequent and requires planning. A car gives more flexibility, especially for trail access.
