Genting Highlands sits at 1,800 metres in the Titiwangsa range, 51 km northeast of Kuala Lumpur. At that altitude, the temperature holds between 15°C and 25°C year-round — a genuine respite from the 32°C–36°C heat in the city below. That climate advantage is what originally drew Genting’s founder, Lim Goh Tong, to build a resort city on an otherwise inaccessible mountain in the 1960s. Today, Resorts World Genting is a vast complex anchored by the Genting SkyWorlds theme park (opened 2022, replacing the older First World Park), a large casino, hotels, a shopping centre, and the Genting Skyway cable car.
For KL visitors, Genting is a popular one-day or overnight escape — 90 minutes up, a full day at the theme park and resort, 90 minutes back. The experience is unambiguously commercial but it delivers what it promises: cool air, rides, and a scale of entertainment infrastructure that does not exist anywhere else in Malaysia.
Genting SkyWorlds — the headline attraction
Genting SkyWorlds opened in 2022 as one of the largest outdoor theme parks in Southeast Asia. The park is organised into 10 themed worlds — Fox’s Studios Malaysia (the first outside North America), Ice Age, Cartoon Network, and others. The major rides include:
Eagle Mountain: A steel roller coaster in a simulated Rocky Mountain setting. One of the park’s flagship thrill rides.
Kung Fu Panda Academy: A 4D motion simulator suitable for families with children 6 and above.
Ice Age Adventure: A water ride with splashdown — one of the few water-based rides in the park.
Hollywood Hotel Fast Track experiences: For additional fees (MYR 40–80), queue-jump passes allow you to skip the main lines on the most popular rides.
The park is partially outdoor and partially covered; the outdoor sections are comfortable at 1,800 m but can get cold during cloud and rain events (pack a light jacket). Weekday visits in non-holiday periods see queue times of 10–20 minutes; weekends during school holidays can push to 60+ minutes.
Genting SkyWorlds day trip from KL — return cable car, park entry, and transport included.Genting Skyway cable car
The Genting Skyway cable car from Gohtong Jaya (mid-mountain station, accessible from the KL highway) is one of the fastest monocable gondolas in the world. The 3.38-km ride takes 11 minutes and climbs through cloud forest and over jungle ravines. It is genuinely dramatic scenery, and the clouds that frequently sit at the top station give the arrival a cinematic quality.
The cable car was closed for several years and reopened in phases; check current operational status before building an itinerary around it. The First World cable car from Awana at the base runs more reliably. Single trip: MYR 12 (~USD 3); return: MYR 22 (~USD 5.50).
Genting Highlands cable car + SkyWorlds combo — return cable car with theme park admission from KL.Getting to Genting Highlands from KL
By organised tour/shuttle (recommended): Multiple operators run dedicated Genting day trips from KL city centre. The standard package includes coach transport, cable car, and theme park entry. Departure from central KL at 9 am–10 am, return by 7 pm–8 pm. This is by far the least stressful approach.
By public bus (budget option): Transnasional and Genting Express run coaches from Puduraya Bus Terminal (KL) to Genting Highlands. Journey: 1.5–2 hours, MYR 10–20 one way. From the bus terminal at Awana, a free shuttle runs to First World Plaza.
By car: The Karak Highway / Middle Ring Road 2 route is the fastest (50–60 min from KL). The road is winding near the summit. Parking at Resorts World Genting is available but expensive and fills quickly on weekends.
By Grab: Grab does not typically serve the full Genting route (the winding mountain roads deter drivers). A private car hire (Grab Car or GoCar) is an option but costs MYR 120–180 (~USD 30–45) one way.
The casino
Genting Casino (now operated under Resorts World Genting) is the only legal land-based casino in Malaysia and was one of Asia’s largest gambling venues before Macau’s expansion. Non-Muslim foreigners and non-Malaysian citizens can enter freely; Malaysian Muslims are legally prohibited from entering. Dress code applies (smart casual; no shorts or flip-flops). The casino floor is massive — slot machines, baccarat, blackjack, roulette. The spectacle is worth seeing even if you do not gamble.
Note: photography is not permitted inside the casino.
Where to eat at Genting
First World Plaza has dozens of restaurants and food courts across multiple levels:
Genting Grand’s Food Court (Food Street): The most economical option — Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Korean dishes from MYR 12–25 per portion.
Coffee Terrace at First World Hotel: Buffet breakfast and dinner — MYR 55–75 per person (~USD 14–19). Functional rather than exceptional.
Resorts World’s restaurant row: Starbucks, a Japanese restaurant, a Malaysian fusion restaurant, and a dim sum house are all available. Weekend evenings often require queuing.
The food options are not the reason to come to Genting — plan to eat a reasonable early lunch at the theme park’s in-park restaurants (pricey but convenient) or at the Food Street, and treat the day as primarily a rides-and-scenery experience.
Practical tips
Pack a jacket: It is genuinely cool at 1,800 m — 15°C at night. Even on a warm day, cloud passages can drop the temperature quickly. A light windbreaker or fleece is useful, particularly on the outdoor cable car and in the SkyWorlds outdoor sections.
Crowd calendar: Genting is one of the most visited sites in Malaysia. The worst times are: Chinese New Year (weeks around late January/February), Hari Raya, Deepavali weekend, and the entire June–July school holiday period. A midweek visit in March, April, September, or October is a fundamentally different experience.
Accommodation: First World Hotel (the tower visible from the highway) is one of the largest hotels in the world by room count and is the budget option on-site (MYR 180–280/night). Highlands Hotel and Genting Grand are the mid-range options. None are luxurious; the value proposition is location and convenience.
Honest warnings
Weekend crowds are genuinely bad: The Genting road on a Friday afternoon can back up for 10–15 km on the approach. The cable car queue on a Saturday can reach 90 minutes. If you have a choice, Tuesday through Thursday is dramatically better.
The SkyWorlds opening was delayed multiple times and some zones were still incomplete at launch: Not all 10 “worlds” were fully operational as of early 2026. Check current status on the official Genting SkyWorlds website before purchasing tickets.
The casino is off-limits for Malaysian Muslims: This is legally enforced, not merely advised. The casino security checks IC cards (national identity) at the entrance.
How to fit this into your KL trip
1-day from KL: Leave central KL at 8:30 am–9 am, arrive Genting by 10:30 am, SkyWorlds until 5 pm, cable car down before dark (cable car closes at sunset in many configurations), back in KL by 8 pm. A full 11-hour day out.
Combine with Batu Caves: Morning at Batu Caves (7 am–10 am), then drive north to Genting (40 minutes by car from Batu Caves — the directions work geographically). This is a long day but geographically logical. The Genting Highlands day trip guide covers the logistics in detail.
4-day KL highlands escape: KL Highlands 4-day itinerary covers Genting on day 1, Cameron Highlands on days 2–3, and return via Ipoh on day 4.
Frequently asked questions about Genting Highlands
How long does it take to get to Genting Highlands from KL?
By organised coach or private car, approximately 75–90 minutes from central KL. The drive is 51 km but involves a mountain road with hairpin bends near the summit. By public bus from Puduraya, allow 2 hours.
Is Genting SkyWorlds better than Sunway Lagoon?
Different target audiences. Genting SkyWorlds has more adult-targeted thrill rides and the cool highland climate. Sunway Lagoon has a large water park and is better for families with young children who want to swim. For theme park rides specifically, SkyWorlds is the larger park.
Do I need to book Genting SkyWorlds tickets in advance?
On weekdays outside school holidays, tickets are available at the gate. On weekends and during school holidays, advance purchase online is strongly recommended — gate tickets sell out, and online prices are typically 10–15% cheaper.
Is there anything to do at Genting besides the theme park and casino?
The Chin Swee Caves Temple (a Taoist temple at 1,675 m, accessible by cable car) is a legitimate cultural attraction with good views over the rainforest. The cloud forest walks around the First World area give a brief contact with highland vegetation. These are minor additions rather than standalone reasons to visit.
What is the temperature in Genting Highlands?
Year-round: 15°C–25°C. Night temperatures can drop to 12°C–15°C. Cloud cover is frequent — expect some mist or light rain during your visit. This is part of the appeal coming from KL’s heat, but prepare for it.
Is the Genting casino open 24 hours?
The casino operates 24 hours. Non-Malaysian non-Muslim adults may enter with a passport. Smart casual dress required. Under-21s are not admitted.
