KL airport to city centre — KLIA and KLIA2 transfer guide
Last reviewed
What is the fastest way from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur city centre?
The KLIA Ekspres train from KLIA or KLIA2 to KL Sentral takes 28–33 minutes and costs MYR 55 (KLIA) or MYR 55 (KLIA2). It runs every 15–20 minutes from 05:00 to 01:00. A Grab from KLIA to the city takes 45–60 minutes and costs MYR 60–100 depending on traffic.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and its low-cost terminal KLIA2 are located in Sepang, 45–55 km south of Kuala Lumpur city centre. The transfer to the city is one of the most frequently asked questions for first-time visitors — and one where the right choice depends on your budget, time, group size, and destination within the city.
This guide covers every realistic option with accurate 2026 prices, realistic travel times, and honest assessments of when each option makes sense.
Understanding KLIA vs. KLIA2
These are two separate terminals, approximately 2 km apart, connected by a free inter-terminal train (Skybus or KLIA Transit, 5 min). KLIA handles Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and most full-service carriers. KLIA2 handles AirAsia and other low-cost carriers.
If you have a flight connection between the two terminals, allow at least 90 minutes for the transfer process (immigration, inter-terminal, check-in).
The transport options from both terminals are similar, but some have different pricing or boarding points — details below.
Option 1: KLIA Ekspres (fastest)
The KLIA Ekspres is a dedicated express train that runs non-stop from KLIA and KLIA2 to KL Sentral (the main transport hub in the city centre). This is the default choice for most visitors.
Journey time:
- KLIA → KL Sentral: 28 minutes
- KLIA2 → KL Sentral: 33 minutes (stops at KLIA en route)
Frequency: Every 15 minutes (peak) to 20 minutes (off-peak), 05:00–01:00 daily.
Fares (2026):
- KLIA → KL Sentral: MYR 55 (USD 14)
- KLIA2 → KL Sentral: MYR 55 (USD 14)
- Return ticket (valid 30 days): MYR 100
Buying tickets: At the KLIA Ekspres counters at the arrival halls in both terminals, or online at kliaekspres.com. Contactless card payment accepted. Book the return ticket on arrival if you want the cheaper rate.
From KL Sentral: You connect to LRT, MRT, Monorail, or Grab to reach your hotel. KL Sentral is centrally located; most city hotels are 10–25 minutes and MYR 10–30 by Grab from here.

The KLIA Transit uses the same track as KLIA Ekspres but stops at three intermediate stations: Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, and Bandar Tasik Selatan.
Use this if: Your destination is Putrajaya or you are connecting to the KTM Komuter at Bandar Tasik Selatan.
Journey time: KLIA → KL Sentral approximately 58 minutes (KLIA2 → KL Sentral ~65 minutes).
Fare: MYR 35–55 depending on origin station.
Option 3: Grab (best for groups or off-city destinations)
Grab is Malaysia’s dominant ride-hailing app. From KLIA arrivals hall, designated Grab pickup zones (clearly signed) operate with no surcharge above the standard app fare.
Journey time: 45–60 minutes to central KL, longer in peak traffic (Friday 17:00–20:00, Saturday morning, Monday morning).
Fares (2026, approximate):
- KLIA or KLIA2 → Bukit Bintang: MYR 65–100
- KLIA or KLIA2 → KLCC: MYR 70–105
- KLIA or KLIA2 → Bangsar: MYR 60–95
For groups of 2–4: Grab becomes competitive with the train when you factor in the cost of train tickets for multiple people plus Grab from KL Sentral to the hotel.
For destinations outside the LRT/MRT network (Chow Kit, Ampang, Petaling Jaya suburbs): Grab door-to-door avoids a second connection.
Private transfers (pre-booked van or MPV) are priced comparably to Grab for larger groups (5–8 people) with more luggage, and guarantee a vehicle at arrival:

Several coach services operate from KLIA and KLIA2 to various points in KL. Aerobus goes to KL Sentral; SkyBus and StarShuttle also serve KL Sentral and some hotels.
Journey time: 45–75 minutes depending on traffic and route.
Fare: MYR 10–18.
Use this if: You are on a very tight budget and are not in a hurry. The coach is comfortable, has Wi-Fi on some services, and deposits you at KL Sentral like the train. Disadvantages: fixed departure times, slower, no guaranteed seat in peak periods.
Option 5: Metered taxi
Official airport taxis from the prepaid taxi counter at KLIA and KLIA2 cost more than Grab:
Fares (2026, prepaid counter):
- Budget taxi (Proton/Perodua): MYR 75–100 to city centre
- Premier taxi: MYR 125–170 to city centre
Do not use: Unlicensed taxi touts in the arrivals hall. They charge MYR 200–350 and sometimes more. The official prepaid counter is the only legitimate taxi option inside the terminal.
Comparing options
| Option | Time | Cost (1 person) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| KLIA Ekspres | 28–33 min | MYR 55 | Speed, solo/couple |
| KLIA Transit | 58–65 min | MYR 35–55 | Putrajaya connection |
| Grab | 45–60 min | MYR 65–100 | Groups, heavy luggage, direct hotel |
| Private van | 50–70 min | MYR 80–150 | Families, 4-6 people |
| Bus | 45–75 min | MYR 10–18 | Budget travellers |
| Metered/prepaid taxi | 45–60 min | MYR 75–170 | Convenience (without app) |
Travelling with KLIA2 specifically
KLIA2 has a reputation for confusing layouts. The Ekspres/Transit station is within the terminal (level 1, follow signs). Grab pickup is on the ground floor — follow the “Transport” or “Grab” signs from arrivals. There is an IKEA immediately adjacent to KLIA2 that sometimes appears on maps and confuses first-time navigation — ignore it for transport purposes.
Arriving late at night
The KLIA Ekspres runs until approximately 01:00. If your flight arrives after midnight, Grab is the only reliable option unless you time the last train. KL’s Grab service operates 24 hours — surge pricing applies from ~00:00–02:00, pushing fares 1.3–1.6x normal.
Getting to the airport for departure
Everything above works in reverse. Note: The KLIA Ekspres City Check-in counter at KL Sentral allows you to check in your luggage at KL Sentral (for eligible airlines) and travel without your luggage on the train — useful for early morning flights.

Frequently asked questions about getting from KLIA to KL city
Is KLIA Ekspres worth the price compared to the bus?
For most visitors: yes. The MYR 55 fare is about MYR 37–40 more than the coach, but saves 20–45 minutes each way and guarantees a fixed departure time (no waiting for the coach to fill). For a family of 4, the price gap widens (MYR 220 for the family by Ekspres vs. MYR 60 by bus).
Which terminal does my airline use?
Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, British Airways, and most full-service carriers use KLIA (main terminal). AirAsia (all routes) uses KLIA2. Check your ticket or airline’s website to confirm.
Can I get Grab from KLIA on arrival?
Yes. Designated Grab pickup zones are available at both KLIA and KLIA2 arrival halls. Follow the “Grab” or “Ride-Hailing” signs from the baggage claim area. You need the Grab app installed and payment method set up before arrival.
How early should I arrive at KLIA for departure?
2 hours for domestic flights, 3 hours for international flights. Add 30 minutes if you need to clear security peak periods (06:00–09:00, 19:00–22:00). If using the KLIA Ekspres, plan the train to arrive at the airport 3h before your flight.
What is the cheapest way from KLIA to KL city?
The bus (Aerobus/SkyBus) at MYR 10–18 is the cheapest. For 2 or more people, Grab becomes competitive per-person. Never take the unlicensed touts in the arrivals hall.
Is there a direct train from KLIA to Bukit Bintang or KLCC?
The KLIA Ekspres goes to KL Sentral, not directly to Bukit Bintang or KLCC. From KL Sentral, take the Monorail to Bukit Bintang (2 stops, MYR 2, 6 min) or the LRT Kelana Jaya Line or MRT to KLCC (2–3 stops, MYR 2–3, 10 min). Or Grab from KL Sentral: MYR 12–20, 10–15 min.
Does the train go from KLIA to Putrajaya?
Yes — the KLIA Transit (not the Ekspres) stops at Putrajaya & Cyberjaya ERL station. From there, take a Grab to Putra Mosque or other Putrajaya sights (10 min, MYR 10–15). See the Putrajaya day trip guide for details.
